Sales is simple, stupid!

There is a sales opportunity so glaringly obvious, so available and so easily attained that it’s literally slapping you in the face…

Worse still, you’ve probably considered this solution before, but openly chosen to ignore it in favour of your tried, tested and proven difficult methods and/or overlooked them in favour of something newfangled and in fashion…

Yes that’s right, I’m suggesting that you’re openly choosing ignorance, difficulty and stupidity in favour of the easiest, most enjoyable, selfless and effective way to generate new sales opportunities!

Here’s my simple guide to the most effective sales strategy you could ever dream of…

  1. Everybody wants to be heard – so listen to them. Meet with contacts, go to events, even ask friends!
  2. Meet people with the simple intention to ask more questions and listen.
  3. When asked ‘what do you do?’ – give a simple answer, and turn the agenda back to them again.
  4. Keep asking questions until you’ve gotten to the root of what is really hacking them off!
  5. Then research how you could help. Speak to contacts, source online resources, find a book, etc…
  6. Once you’re satisfied you have the answer – pick up the phone and provide the help you’ve sourced.
  7. The contact will be so grateful for the help that they’ll go out of their way to help you in return…
  8. Then make sure you have an effective, concise answer to the question ‘how can I help you?’

Sure, this can be a time consuming strategy to adopt IF you’re helping the wrong people with the wrong connections, who have problems you genuinely can’t help with. So be cynical about your approach before you start. Make sure you’re moving in circles of people whom you want to help and would ultimately benefit you.

You might also have to ask for help if the help is not forthcoming… but actually, you’ll probably find that those you’ve helped will be grateful that you’ve asked and given them the opportunity to return the favour. Honestly, you’ll be amazed…

And the best thing about it all… you’ll build a strong personal brand as a person who makes things happen. People you help will love you for it, and unsurprisingly, those that you refer will love you for it. In fact, helping people is just about the most fun you can have with your clothes on! What’s more, you’ll undoubtedly win admirers and pick up a few new friends in the process.

It really is that simple.

There is nothing difficult about this approach. Everybody can do it. You don’t need a PHD in sales. You don’t need a lifetime of experience. You don’t need a healthy sales and marketing budget. You don’t need to think about it too long. And you’ll only get better at it the longer time goes on. It’s otherwise known as ‘referral marketing’ but I would argue it’s even easier than that…

But here’s the really amazing thing…

The majority of you will have read this blog post, dismissed it out of hand and prefer to stick with what you know and have proven to be more difficult! Why? Who knows?! Perhaps you actually revel in the challenge despite knowing there’s an easy way! As Forrest Gump would say “stupid is as stupid does?!”

For the rest of us, the small minority, this is great news. This means there will always be the opportunity to go about our business, with genuine intent to help, and plenty of people who have yet to be heard!

Go forth my friends…

P.S. Feel free to ask me what I want, listen to me, source and answer and help where you can. In return, I’d be happy to see what I can do!
